Into Japan
Since I was a kid, the traditions of Japan have fascinated me; the unique reverence for nature and contemplation, the restraint, the perfection of imperfection, and the radical intrusion of western modernity into a recently feudal world. I finally got a chance to visit in 2014 and the fascination has only grown since.
The underexposed, monochrome images are meant to capture my feeling of being there in those moments. Like subtle portals, those regions of deep black shadow are a reminder to meditate and travel inward. These are mostly absent in the more modern scenes.
